HOT NEWS:
Sorry. Still having some picture problems.
David Fincher will direct a music video for the group TOOL. (Or a song called "Judith" by a band called A Perfect Circle, which features the lead singer of TOOL. I'm still trying to find out. I've been told to go check out http://toolshed.down.net/news/ but the link doesn't work for me. Maybe you'll have better luck.)
The Fight Club DVD will feature commentary by David Fincher, Edward Norton, Brad Pitt, and Helena Bonham Carter. It will also have deleted scenes, alternate edits of scenes in the movie, trailers, TV spots, the fake "PSA" spots, a music video, and images of lobby cards and posters. There will also be extensive stuff on production paintings and drawings, 12 "vignettes" (I think these make use of the multi-angle feature), AND MORE!

DVD News: The DVD for SE7EN is pushed back to August (DVDExpress is reporting June, but New Line has told me August), but will be a super-duper Platinum set. There are so many extras it takes up two discs. I quote "It will be one of New Line's most cutting edge DVDs." If you know their other DVDs, you know what a bold statement that is. No other info is available yet. (Boogie Nights is also being re-released as a two disc Platinum Series DVD. I just thought that was cool.)

www.FIGHTCLUB.com is no longer a movie fan site. Now it has some junk about video games and links to video games about boxing. Random mishap or exploitive marketing ploy? You make the call.

I saw SE7EN on opening night and was completely blown away by how good of a film it was. My girlfriend (at the time) wanted to go home, she was so freaked out, but I refused. People in the theater must have thought I was nuts; they were all repulsed by the grisly murders, but I was sitting there with a smile on my face. All I could think of was "What a great shot" or "my God, this guy moves the camera beautifully."
I wanted to put up this site because, as a film student and filmmaker, I have a deep admiration for Fincher's control over the medium. I feel that by studying his works, both his films and his superb music videos, I can learn a lot and become a better director myself. I went looking for information on him on the internet, but I could find very little.
Here is a compilation of some of the facts I've been able to pick up. If you have any more, if you have any corrections, or if I've stepped on your toes (copyright wise) please let me know at

When David Fincher was young, he lived just a few houses down from George Lucas. After American Graffiti came out, Lucas became one of Fincher's favorite directors. He eventually asked Lucas for a job, and was given one.
Fincher went to work at ILM when he was 18. By 19, he was an assistant visual-effects camera man on Return of the Jedi. Always a big Star Wars fan, rumor had it that he may direct the second or third of the new Star Wars Prequels. (George Lucas has since said that he'll direct the other two himself).
Fight Club is Fincher's most recent film. It hit theatres (no pun intended) on Oct. 15. Fight Club re-unites Fincher with Brad Pitt. Pitt, of course, starred in Fincher's masterpiece SE7EN.
Based on a novel by Chuck Pahlaniuk, Fight Club was one of the most subversive films ever. It was also one of the most amazing pieces of cinema I've ever seen. It was fast, furious, and funny. (Although it usually took the rest of the audience about 15-20 minutes to realize it was OK to be laughing.) The trailers alone had been better than most movies out there.
(Another film, The Sky Is Falling, was rumored to be a Fincher project. It apparently has been passed on to another director, if it ever was Fincher's. I read somewhere that Fincher wrote it, but was never set to direct. Anyone know what's up? Rendezvous with Rama and The Black Dahlia are also rumored to be possible Fincher projects, but are still unconfirmed. (Now, reports state that Fincher is set to direct a film called Passengers. See the links above.)
Fincher has a unique and wonderful visual sense, which was developed through years of working in commercials and music videos. It also benefits by the collaborations with some of the most talented Cinematographers in the business. It is also interesting to note that the second unit Director of Photogrpahy (DP) on one film often goes on to become the main unit DP on Fincher's next film.
Fincher's talent has drawn comparison's to Orson Welles, Alfred Hitchcock, and Stanley Kubrick.

One of the really amazing things to me is how much Fincher lets you see, even though, most of the time, everything is shrouded in darkness. His compositions are impeccable. Virtually every frame in anything he's done would make an absolutely beautiful photograph. His use of lighting and camera movement cause the subject to stand out clearly against the background. Fincher also commonly uses a very shallow depth of field; you look at what he wants you to look at. Also common is his use of silhouettes, backlighting, smoky locations with flashlights, and just a general sense of grime. (Fight Club amazingly pulls off the fact that, by normal standards, almost the entire film is underexposed .)
On SE7EN, The Game, and Fight Club, Fincher also used a special process of making the release prints so that the blacks in the film weren't just kinda dark, they were BLACK. (I've got some technical information on this procedure from American Cinematographer articles on those two films and I'll post it one day. There are links to the online version of AC in the "Links" section.) This really helped enforce the mood of those two films.

David Fincher is also one of the founding members of Propaganda Films. They've been one of the top music video and commercial producers since the '80's and have moved into the world of features with The Game.
David Fincher has said that his favorite movie is Star Wars. Ya' gotta love this guy.
